VHIS: The Hong Kong SAR Government has passed the policy of a regulated Voluntary Health Insurance Scheme, which will be introduced starting 1st April 2019.  The scheme will include a standardized healthcare protection plan with defined overage and co-payment, and all VHIS-compliant products will be eligible for tax-exemption. There are both optimism and scepticism in response to the policy.  The investment of the Government in regulating health insurance is perceived as a challenge for both the insurance industry and the healthcare profession.  However, there are also views that it is an opportunity to promote fair healthy competition because of service and price transparency.  It is not easy to predict the landscape and ecology of the insurance and healthcare industries but possible scenarios will be discussed.  In general, it would be an exciting time for both industries in the coming decade.
